Fun Facts about Turkeys

Before we begin, here are some facts about turkeys that you can share with your kids to expand your TP roll turkey craft into a fun time of learning:

  • Turkeys Can Fly (Kind Of!): Even though wild turkeys are pretty big, they can actually fly for short distances! They usually fly up into trees to stay safe from predators.
  • A Turkey’s “Gobble” Sound Is Only for Males: Only male turkeys, called toms, make the famous “gobble” sound to attract females, called hens. Female turkeys are quieter and make sounds like clucks and purrs.
  • Turkeys Change Color! The skin on a turkey’s head can change colors depending on its mood. When a male turkey gets excited, his head and neck can change to bright red, blue, or white!
  • They Sleep in Trees: Wild turkeys sleep high up in trees at night. They fly up at sunset to stay safe from animals on the ground.
  • Turkeys Have Strong Eyesight: Turkeys can see in color, and they have excellent vision during the day—about three times better than human eyesight! They can also see nearly 360 degrees around them without moving their heads.
  • Turkey Babies Are Called Poults: Baby turkeys, or poults, are hatched from eggs and are able to walk and follow their mom just a few hours after they’re born.
  • They Can Run Fast: Wild turkeys can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can run!
  • The Wattle and Snood: The red, fleshy part hanging down from a turkey’s neck is called a wattle, and the long piece that hangs over the beak is called a snood. Both the snood and wattle help keep them cool.
  • They Can Make a Lot of Different Sounds: Turkeys communicate with each other using different sounds, like purrs, yelps, and clucks. Some experts say they have over 20 distinct calls!
