Fun Facts about Sloths

Before we begin, here are some facts about sloths that you can share with your kids to expand your sloth craft into a fun time of learning:

  • Slow Movers: Sloths are known for their slow movements, which are a result of their low metabolic rate. They move at a top speed of about 0.03 miles per hour (0.05 km/h).
  • Three-Toed vs. Two-Toed: There are two main types of sloths: three-toed and two-toed. Despite the name, both types actually have three toes on their back limbs. The difference lies in the number of toes on their front limbs.
  • Upside-Down Lifestyle: Sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down in trees. Special adaptations in their muscles and circulatory system help them stay in this position.
  • Algae Coats: The fur of a sloth can grow a greenish tint due to algae that thrive in their slow-moving fur. This algae helps camouflage them among the trees, making them less visible to predators.
  • Low Energy Diet: Sloths primarily eat leaves, which provide very little energy. As a result, they have a very slow digestion process, and their food can take weeks to fully digest.
  • Extended Sleep: Sloths can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Their slow metabolism and energy-efficient lifestyle contribute to their need for extensive rest.
  • Unique Claws: Sloths have long, curved claws that help them grip tree branches securely. These claws can grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) long and are used primarily for hanging rather than walking.
  • Slow Heart Rate: Their heart rate is also quite slow, averaging between 27 to 50 beats per minute, compared to the typical mammalian rate of around 60 to 100 beats per minute.
  • Limited Movement: Because of their slow nature, sloths come down from their trees only about once a week to use the bathroom. This is a risky move, but it’s necessary for them to maintain their territory.
  • Friendly with Moths: Sloths have a symbiotic relationship with moths and beetles. The moths lay eggs in the sloth’s fur, and their larvae feed on algae and dead skin. In return, the sloths get a bit of help with grooming and camouflage.

This sloth craft would be a terrific project after a homeschool trip to the zoo, or if your kids are learning about animals native to Central and South America. Plus, it gives you a crafty way to repurpose used toilet paper rolls.
