Summer Sensory Bin: Bugs & Lima Beans

Sensory bins are terrific hands-on projects for young children, and this summer sensory bin combines bugs and beans for a colorful and fun experience!

Supplies for your Summer Sensory Bin with “Bugs” and Beans

  • 2 16oz bags of dried large white lima beans
  • Acrylic paint: light green and dark green
  • 2 gallon-size ziplock bags
  • Wax paper
  • Cooking sheet
  • Sensory Bin
  • Plastic bugs
  • Tweezers
  • Tongs
  • Scoops
  • Spoons
  • Bug Net

Instructions for Summer Sensory Bin

Step 1

Gather the lima beans, acrylic paint, zip-lock bags, wax paper, and cooking sheet.

Step 2

Cover a cooking sheet with wax paper and set it aside.

Step 3

Pour one bag of lima beans into each zip-lock baggie. Add 1-2 tablespoons of dark green acrylic paint to one bag and 1-2 tablespoons of light green acrylic paint to the other baggie.

Step 4

Seal both bags and carefully agitate the beans to cover them with the paint.

Step 5

Carefully pour each bag of painted lima beans onto the prepared cooking sheet. Try to get the beans in a single layer. Let it dry overnight.

Step 6

In a clean and dry sensory bin, pour both colors of lima beans and mix by hand. Add the rest of the bug accessories and enjoy!
