Fun Facts about Llamas

Before we begin, here are some interesting facts about llamas that kids might enjoy, which you can use to expand your llama weaving craft into a fun time of learning:

  • Llamas are great at carrying things – Llamas have been used as pack animals for hundreds of years in South America. They can carry up to 75 pounds and walk for miles!
  • They are part of the camel family – Even though llamas don’t have humps, they’re related to camels! Both llamas and camels are members of the same family called Camelidae.
  • Llamas can “talk” – Llamas hum to communicate with each other. It’s like their own secret language!
  • They come with their own fuzzy coats – Llamas have soft, woolly fur that keeps them warm in the cold Andes Mountains. Their wool is used to make clothes and blankets.
  • They’re gentle and friendly – Llamas are very social and love to be around other llamas. People sometimes call them gentle giants because of their calm nature.
  • Llamas spit… but only when they’re mad – Llamas sometimes spit to show they’re unhappy or when they feel threatened. But don’t worry – they usually only do this to each other!
  • Llamas are great guards – Farmers often use llamas to protect sheep or other animals from predators like coyotes. Llamas are very alert and will chase off anything they see as a threat.
  • They have unique feet – Llamas have soft padded feet with two toes. This makes them sure-footed and great at walking on rocky and uneven ground.
