Kids love to pretend as they play, and puppet shows are a terrific way for kids to use their imagination. And this owl papercraft puppet is the perfect craft for kids looking for something to do that involves creativity and lots of fun!

Owls are fascinating birds and there are some fun facts about owls that you might be surprised to hear. So, before jumping into this owl papercraft puppet, let’s look at eight interesting facts about owls:

  1. An owl’s eyes are unmistakable, as they are so large! Your owl papercraft puppet will have those telltale big eyes. Owls are farsighted, which means they can see things far away, but can’t see things close-up as clearly.
  2. Owls have powerful talons that help them catch their prey. They also have zygodactyl feet, which means they have two front-facing toes and two back-facing toes. This helps them with their hunting as well.
  3. Owls such as barn owls will swallow their prey whole and they can eat 1,000 mice in a single year!
  4. Some owl species, like the northern hawk owl can detect prey up to half a mile away. 
  5. Speaking of species, there are roughly 200 different owl species in the world!
  6. The eyes of an owl are tube-shaped and immobile. With their eyes, owls can focus completely on their prey with binocular-type vision. 
  7. The largest owl in North America is the great gray owl, which can be up to 32 inches tall. That’s nearly three feet!
  8. The smallest owl in the world is the elf owl, which is only about five or six inches tall and weighs less than two ounces.

You’ll need just a few things to complete this craft, and you probably already have them at home! You will also want the downloadable template to make this craft super easily (especially when working with younger kids).

  1. Colored craft paper
  2. Craft glue
  3. Sharpie
  4. Popsicle sticks
  5. Pencil
  6. Scissors

Instructions for Owl Papercraft Puppet:

Step 1:

Select different colored craft paper of your choice for the owl papercraft. Trace the body base, the two wings, the face, beak, and bottom part (half-circular pattern) on the craft paper you’ve selected. Make sure you trace the face pattern on a light color of craft paper so you can draw the eyes on them. Carefully cut out the traced patterns.

Step 2:

Glue the face pattern on the top side of the body base and the half-circular pattern on the bottom side of the body base.

Step 3:

Glue the two wing patterns on either side of the body base.

Step 4:

Attach the beak to the middle of the face pattern with glue.

Step 5:

Use a sharpie to draw the eyes of the paper owl on the face pattern. In case you are using a dark colored craft paper, you can draw the eyes on two round paper cutouts from white paper. Then use a sharpie to draw the eyes on them. Finally, glue the eye cutouts to the face pattern.

Step 6:

For the last step, you’ll want to attach the papercraft owl to a popsicle stick. Now you have completed your owl papercraft puppet.
