Origami Dragonfly
Whether you’re a novice or an experienced folder, crafting this origami dragonfly will be a rewarding experience. It’s a terrific project for you to take on with your older kids.
The word “origami” comes from two Japanese words: “ori” (meaning “fold”) and “kami” (meaning “paper”). It is an ancient art form dating back centuries. Although this origami dragonfly might not be one of the earliest forms of origami, it can be a creative and intricate project to take on with your kids.
In this post, we will walk through the step-by-step process of creating your own origami dragonfly, with photos included. So, clear a space and gather your homeschool class, and let’s get started!

Instructions for the Origami Dragonfly
Step 1
Select a piece of colored craft paper and prepare a square sheet from it.
Step 2
Make diagonal half-folds along both sides of the square sheet and then unfold.
Step 3
Turn the paper to the other side and make vertical and horizontal half-folds along that side. Unfold again.
Step 4
Fold the diagonal creases upwards (outwards) and fold in the vertical and horizontal creases.
Step 5
Fold and flatten the current pattern.
Step 6
Fold the 2 open sides of the current pattern along the middle crease.
Step 7
Unfold the last 2 folds.
Step 8
Open the top layer and fold its sides along the last 2 creases.
Step 9
Fold it neatly and bring the layer (flap) to its initial side.
Step 10
Turn the current origami pattern to the other side.
Step 11
Fold this side like we did for the other side.
Step 12
Open the top flap and draw it to the opposite side.
Step 13
The middle layer should have 2 small flaps (on the left and right). Fold out the right flap by aligning its inner side with the middle (horizontal) crease.
Step 14
Unfold the last fold.
Step 15
Open the right side of the top flap and then also open the right small flap along the crease created in the previous step.
Step 16
Fold in the right small flap along its crease and flatten it under the right side of the top layer/flap.
Step 17
Similarly, fold and flatten the left side.
Step 18
We’ll work on the layer/ flap on the top (the triangle part on top of the current origami pattern).
Step 19
Slightly open the right inner corner of the top layer.
Step 20
Fold and flatten that corner neatly.
Step 21
Similarly, fold and flatten the left side.
Step 22
Turn the current origami pattern to the other side.
Step 23
We will work on the right side of the top layer (the diamond-shaped part). Draw the right side of the top layer upwards and fold it inside.
Step 24
Flatten that side with the top layer.
Step 25
Similarly, fold and flatten the left side.
Step 26
The 2 symmetrical parts will be the wings, the thin part will be the backside and the wide part will be the front side of the origami dragonfly. Use scissors to cut slits along the middle creases of the wing parts; forming a total of 4 wings.
Step 27
Apply glue on the backside part of the origami dragonfly.
Step 28
Fold the whole origami pattern in half, symmetrically. Do not glue the wings.
Step 29
Unfold the wings neatly and spread them nicely.
Step 30
Coil the front part of the origami pattern to make the head of the origami dragonfly.
