Fun Facts about Polar Bears
- Polar bears are big and strong: Polar bears are the largest land carnivores in the world. They are very strong and can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms)!
- They’re great swimmers: Polar bears are excellent swimmers and can swim for long distances in search of food. They use their front paws like paddles and their back legs to steer.
- They have thick fur: Polar bears have thick fur to keep them warm in their icy habitat. Their fur is not actually white—it’s made up of clear, hollow tubes that reflect light, making them appear white.
- Polar bears are well-adapted to the cold: They have a thick layer of fat called blubber under their skin, which helps keep them warm in the freezing Arctic temperatures.
- They’re fantastic hunters: Polar bears mainly eat seals, which they hunt by waiting for them to come up to breathe at holes in the ice. They can also catch seals when they surface on the ice.
- They’re solitary animals: Polar bears are usually solitary animals, meaning they like to be alone. The only time they spend time with other bears is when they’re mating or with their cubs.
- Polar bears are great moms: Female polar bears give birth to their cubs in snow dens, where they stay until the cubs are strong enough to survive in the harsh Arctic environment. Moms are very protective of their cubs and teach them how to survive.
