Felt Weather Craft Board
Make a Weather Craft Board out of Felt with Your Kids
February is the perfect month for a weather craft! With Groundhog Day on the 2nd and National Weatherman’s Day on the 5th, it’s a great time to help your children explore weather concepts through a hands-on project. This interactive felt weather craft board lets kids practice “forecasting” the day’s weather, season, temperature, and more while building fine motor skills through simple sewing and assembly.
This engaging weather craft is ideal for preschoolers through early elementary ages and pairs beautifully with weather books, songs, or printable worksheets.
This project could also accompany other weather-related activities and printables.

Instructions for the Felt Weather Board Craft

Step 1
Print and cut out the template patterns for the weather craft board. The template includes patterns for days and seasons bases, weather icons, a thermometer, an arrow, and season symbols. Trace the patterns on the selected colored felt and cut them out nicely using scissors.

Step 2
Use a gel pen to write the names of the 7 days of the week on the long label cutouts.

Step 3
Use black thread to work backstitches along the traced names. Backstitching is a terrific thing for older children to learn how to do and hone their fine motor skills. If you’re working with young children, you might do this part yourself.

Step 5
Again, use black thread to work backstitches along the traced names.

Step 6
Take the thermometer cutouts and place the light blue square cutout on the base; near the round end.

Step 7
Place and stitch the square cutouts on the base (light blue, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red).

Step 8
Attach the arrow cutout to a thread horizontally and then thread it from one end to the other. Draw the open ends of the attached thread to the backside and tie a knot to secure it. You can pull the attached thread forward and backward to move the arrow along the thermometer.

Step 9
Take the season base cutouts (round shapes). Place the symbols of the seasons on the bases.

Step 10
Stitch the felt items on the round bases to complete the season symbols.

Step 11
Attach 1-inch yarn loops to the season symbol felt patterns.

Step 12
Now, craft the weather icons. Assemble the sun, the raindrops along the bottom side of a cloud cutout, and a lightning bolt on another cloud cutout.

Step 13
Use a gel pen to trace a snowflake pattern on the small round cutout and twirly patterns to represent windy weather on the piece with 3 round edges.

Step 14
Use white thread to work backstitches along the traced patterns.

Step 15
Select a base felt (A4 size) and assemble the following items on it – “today is”, an arrow, thermometer, 1 square board to show the current weather, and a square board to keep the rest of the weather symbols, buttons or round felt cutouts to hang the season symbols.

Step 16
Stitch the assembled felt items on the board. Prepare Velcro for the week and weather items.

Step 17
Use a hot glue gun to attach a long loop cutout on the left side of the A4 size board, vertically. Attach small hook cutouts on the backside of the day labels.

Step 18
You can now place the day labels on the vertical hook. Attach one small hook cutout on the left side of the arrow near the “today is” label.

Step 19
Similarly, attach loop cutouts on the backside of the weather icons and hook cutouts on the small weather craft boards.

Step 20
Hang the season symbols on the round felt buttons. Keep an extra round felt button near the top to show the current season.
Your felt weather craft board is ready! Each morning, kids can update the day, season, temperature, and weather. We love making learning about weather fun and interactive! Let us know if you make this!
