Papercraft Giraffe Bookmark

Sharing is caring!

Are you always running low on bookmarks? It feels like I’m always on the search for one, as my kids read several books at one time (a habit they most likely got from me). 🙂

In any case, a craft project like this giraffe bookmark is ideal when you have several books lying around. In our case, as I look around the living room, I spot one of The Wingfeather Saga books (my daughter’s), a WWII history book (my younger son’s), and one of the Narnian Chronicles (my older son’s).

Projects like this cute giraffe bookmark are the perfect craft for homeschooling kids and avid readers. They can also make a fun project to go along with a summer reading challenge

Fun Facts about Giraffes

Before we begin, here are some interesting facts about giraffes to expand your arts and crafts time into a fun lesson:

  • The tallest land animal in the world: A grown-up giraffe can be as tall as a school bus turned on its end — up to 19 feet tall!
  • Super-long necks, but the same number of neck bones as you: Even though a giraffe’s neck can be over 6 feet long, it has seven neck bones—just like humans. Each bone is just super big!
  • Purple tongues for a purpose: A giraffe’s tongue is about 18–20 inches long and dark purple or black to protect it from getting sunburned while it munches leaves all day.
  • Sleepy giants: Giraffes don’t need much sleep. They usually snooze for only 30 minutes to 2 hours a day—and sometimes they nap standing up!
  • Built-in high blood pressure control: Because their hearts have to pump blood all the way up to their heads, giraffes have super strong hearts that can weigh up to 25 pounds.
  • They have a “leaf menu”: Their favorite snack is the leaves of the acacia tree. Those trees have sharp thorns, but giraffes are experts at using their long tongues to work around them.
  • Baby giraffes are already taller than you: A newborn giraffe can be 6 feet tall—which means they’re taller than most grown-ups on the very first day of their lives!
  • Running skyscrapers: Giraffes can gallop up to 35 miles per hour for short bursts, despite their tall, lanky legs.

Okay, let’s get started on the giraffe bookmark!
