I am so glad winter is finally behind us. This past winter was a nightmare for my family. Peanut joined our family in December, and then from there, we had everything from middle of the night ambulance rides, medical errors resulting in emergency surgeries, broken bones and more surgeries, and countless other illnesses and bad days. The winter blues were more than just a saying in our house, and I have needed sunshine and fresh air more than I can express in words.
Spring in Washington DC is pure magic. If you have never been, pencil it in on your bucket list. There are flowers everywhere, and even the animals are happy! We set off to the National Zoo for a field trip to kick off our warm weather adventures, and check out what the animals are up to.
Something you may not know about me… I love my Coca-Cola. Nothing is better to me than an ice cold bottle of Coke… well, maybe an ice cold glass of Coke right from the fountain. It’s no surprise at all that when I headed off for this adventure, I wanted to bring a Coke along with me.
There’s a Walgreens right in my neighborhood, so we ran in to grab me a coke on the way, and then headed to the zoo!
I had never been to the National Zoo before this trip, and I am surprised more people don’t rave about it. From the get go, you have to know I am a zoo snob, being born and raised in San Diego, but this one is officially my #4 favorite zoo ever (behind San Diego, Budapest, and the tiny neighborhood zoo in Germany where I got to feed the wild animals…).
The National Zoo is awesome for a couple reasons. First, it’s free (cue angels singing here). Second, you can reserve parking in advance if you don’t want to metro in (don’t go without doing that!). And lastly, the animals are to die for.
They may be famous for their pandas, but my absolute favorite part of the zoo is the orangutans. They happen to be my favorite animal (I am working on convincing the kids) so when one crossed the bridge above my head, I about died of happiness.
We had an amazing time. The kids were thrilled to see all the animals and the animals were thrilled it was warm and sunny. I can’t think of a better way to start field trip season!
What makes you happy? Grab a Coke, and get out there and enjoy spring!
